Virginia Equine Imaging
The Asto Equina is a dual-limb, fan-beam CT unit that is capable of imaging equine limbs from the carpus/tarsus down to the foot, as well as the equine head and neck. Scan acquisition is fast and able to be completed in a standing, sedated horse. This fan-beam unit captures excellent bone and soft tissue detail, allowing for diagnosis of a wide variety of pathologies.
All CT images are sent to a board-certified radiologist for interpretation. Radiology reports are generally available within 24-48 hours of submission.
We welcome imaging referrals and work closely with multiple equine surgery centers in the area. Our veterinarians are available to assist you in selecting the imaging that would be most appropriate for your horse.
Interested in a CT for your horse? Please fill out our online CT Form and call our office to schedule an appointment.
At VEI, we do not offer CT imaging under general anesthesia or standing myelography.
Standing Equine CT in Private Practice
Real-World Lameness & Surgical Cases with Asto CT
In this presentation, Dr. Jack Caldwell of Virginia Equine Imaging (VEI) discusses how Asto CT’s standing fan-beam CT is being used in private equine practice to improve diagnostics, treatment planning, and outcomes for performance horses. Dr. Caldwell walks through real-world clinical cases involving sport horses, jumpers, dressage horses, and eventers—highlighting how standing CT has enhanced the evaluation of complex lameness, distal limb pathology, neck conditions, head trauma, and surgical planning. These cases demonstrate how CT imaging can reveal pathology that may be underestimated or missed with radiographs, ultrasound, or low-field MRI alone.
